I'm shocked how easy it was but, yes, I think it makes it easier if they can understand. I'm going to do a follow-up post on this, too, when I get a moment, on how it's gone.

OK. Well, I will try to get up the tree! It was the middle-class sexism that got to me - I wonder if that came from me or from my mum, though. Or a bit of both, perhaps.

The Narnia books are a bit scary - but also exciting.

I stopped at 2 I told A that mummy had fed her for two years and the milk would be stopping in 2 days. Did the same as you distracted her through a few days she asked once or twice but was told no no more now darling and she was okay. Nice they can understand rather than being heartbroken,,,had to put loads of stories/songs in place ot get her to sleep though!

Promise you the Magic Faraway Tree is a LEGEND of a book even my hubbycites it as one of his best childhood memories and he's not a reader. Anytime I do a comp saying what was your fave kids book Faraway Tree comes out no.1 hands down. Got to get up the tree so do give it a few chapters. I LOVED Enid Blyton (sexist middle class as she was - took me YEARS to realise this!) and spent a lot of time reading malory towers books as a child then seemed to move stright onto agatha christire and horse riding books!!! Perhaps I should give Harry P - a go the rest of the worls seems to like it! I didn't read the Narnia books because i thought they seemed a bit scary!

Oh my word - how can you not like Harry Potter? Harry Potter is absolutely fantastic! RoRo's just started on the sixth book (Chris is reading them to her) and she love them. And you didn't read the Narnia books? Have to say, I'm afraid I really didn't like Enid Blyton when I was a kid, though I never read The Magic Faraway Tree - we have a copy here, from the 1930s Housewife challenge, but RoRo wasn't interested after one chapter, and I wasn't complaining. Maybe I should give it another go and see if I can see more in it now!

Would be interested to hear what you think when you've read more about it. I haven't really asked any teachers about it - keep meaning to ask RoRo's teacher but never seem to get the chance.

It's weird the huge flack it caught, actually and, while there are definitely things that will make you gasp, I don't think it warranted it. Hope you enjoy it if you do read it.

This is really interesting for me as I've been out of the classroom for two years and just contemplating going back. Things change so quickly,

It does seem strange to isolate the sounds so much. Will have to look into this a bit more. Great post. Thanks for linking to the education showcase.
