How many times have you heard someone say that the kitchen is the heart of the home? The reason this phrase is so popular is that the kitchen is widely considered to be the most important room in the house.

Change in attitude

Our relationship with the kitchen has evolved over the past couple of decades; we now think of it as a family space, rather than simply being somewhere to cook and prepare meals. In the past, families gathered around formal dining tables in a separate room. However, today we have such a relaxed attitude towards food, that the kitchen is now a living space as well.

Just stop and think for a moment… What do you do in your kitchen aside from preparing or cooking food? Chat with friends? Watch television? Pay the bills?  Drink coffee?

These are all things that we tend to do in our kitchen that would never have happened 20 years ago. It’s because of its flexibility and multi-purpose utility that the kitchen is the most important room in the home.

Baking

We can easily see that the kitchen isn’t just a place for cooking, as we do all sorts of other things in it, but there’s another activity that has taken the UK by storm recently… baking.

Since Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry appeared on our screens with the Great British Bake Off, baking has had a huge rise in popularity. In fact, 79 per cent of adults now bake at home, with a quarter baking at least once a week.

Those figures are pleasantly surprising and give us yet another reason to spend time in the kitchen. Although baking is technically cooking, it’s not something that we do out of necessity any more. Many people see it as an enjoyable way to relax.

Family-friendly

There are many spaces in the home that are private, such as your bedroom and bathroom, for example. In contrast, the kitchen and lounge are open to everyone. The kitchen is used by just about everyone in the home, numerous times a day, so it’s important that it is kept looking clean and fresh.

There’s nothing worse than coming home from a hard day’s work to be greeted by dirty plates in the sink and crumbs on the work surfaces. If your kitchen is a warm and welcoming living space, the kids may also be more likely to tidy up after themselves.
